Although he has now died, the Flying Grey was one of the country's best-loved racehorses. In 2004 he was named the second favourite racehorse of all time, behind Arkle and ahead of Red Rum. He remained at the top for a long time and was retired for longer than he raced but, unlike other racehorses, never fell into obscurity. Since retiring Dessie raised thousands of pounds for charity by appearing at public events; he was a crowd puller.
