Front gardens

The Englishman's home is his castle, and the front garden is its public face and its red carpet (well, green, usually, unless it's been block-paved). A front garden expresses not only it's owner's character, but how they want to be thought of by the rest of the world, even when they couldn't care less. They mirror their owners – from the obsessively tidy to the wasteland of rubbish and weeds. When we ring the bell, we know what sort of person will open the door. Front gardens create first impressions for visitors. Front gardens are the green salvation of residential roads. Front gardens are the transition zone from public to private. Front gardens are folk art – icons.
