Gateshead Millennium Bridge

Is this an icon?

Gateshead Millennium Bridge

A relative newcomer compared to some of our nominated icons, the Gateshead Millennium Bridge was officially opened by the Queen in 2002. Visually, it is one of the most distinctive bridges in the world: it has already been pictured on a stamp and will be representing England on a new pound coin issued by the Royal Mint in 2007. The ingenious design consists of a near-horizontal steel arch to walk and cycle on, suspended by cables from a vertical arch. Its hydraulic system enables the arches to tilt quite spectacularly whenever a ship needs to pass underneath. And it even clears up its own litter! The sight of the bridge at night with its stunning state of the art lighting design makes this icon an absolute must-see!

it is a good example of a bridge linking two communities and it is the first in world of its type

It's unique in the world. Akin to inventing the wheel. And it works!

a beautiful bridge over the river tyne, which opens to allow larger ships to pass, and which looks like an eye blinking

My favourite Icon of England has to be the Cornish Pasty.
