Harley Street

If it relates to your physical health and well-being, there’ll be a specialist on Harley Street who can fix it – from general practice to hypnotherapy, from plastic surgery to psychiatry. But it’s not a place to visit if money is tight – Harley Street is seen as the centre of elite private health care and you pay for what you get. Located in well-to-do Marylebone, between Regent’s Park and Wigmore Street, it became a fashionable place for the medical profession in the 1860s. Apparently, Sir William Jenner was the first to take up residence there. He was the physician to Queen Victoria and the Prince of Wales and made the distinction between the symptoms of typhus and typhoid. Jenner’s move wasn’t the first time Harley Street had been linked with the medical profession though – Florence Nightingale ran a nursing home for gentlewomen there before she went to the Crimea in 1854.
