Irony

An ironic view of life's ups and downs, accompanied by often spontaneous dry humour, is very English. Think of its artistic legacy: shows such as Not the Nine o'Clock News to Victoria Wood, Private Eye magazine to classic literature - Evelyn Waugh, Anthony Powell, Kingsley Amis's Lucky Jim. Observational irony is the backbone of our sense of humour. Sarcasm is on the list but this is more positive and more English. Ironic my surname is Scots really!
