Liverpool Overhead Railway

In 1893 the famous Liverpool Overhead Railway opened along the Liverpool Waterfront. It was the first electric elevated railway in the world and the first to be protected by electric automatic signals. Nicknamed the "Dockers Umbrella" it was the forerunner of the elevated railway systems in North American cities like New York and Chicago. Sadly it closed in 1957 and was dismantled.

Very happy childhood memories. Going out on the Overhead was a great adventure so sea the docks and sites of Liverpool. My father took me on the Overhead to Gladstone Dock to see the "Empress of Canada" after she was burnt out.One of the sadder moments!
