National Space Centre, Leicester

Have you ever looked up at the night sky and wondered if there was life on another planet? Do you secretly think you have what it takes to be an astronaut? Then the National Space Centre in Leicester is the place for you! The first thing you’ll notice is the huge Rocket Tower, looking like an over-sized plastic cocoon, which houses not one but two actual rockets. Inside the main building are five different galleries to help you explore the universe in a hands-on way: make your own alien, record your own TV weather report and find out if you could handle a mission to the ice moon, Europa. But let’s be honest, England is not well-known for her prowess in the Space Race (the ill-fated Beagle 2 voyage to Mars is maybe an incident best left to fade in memory). But what the Space Centre does so brilliantly, in common with many other English museums and educational centres, is bring its subject to life for visitors of all ages, expanding our minds with a wealth of information – and entertaining us all at the same time.
