National Football Museum, Preston

Football is seen as this country's national sport, and the Football Museum details its proud history. Deepdale is also the home of Preston North End - one of the original founders of the Football League, and the only founder member to be still playing at their original ground. The National Football Museum is a monument to Football. Football was formalised andpopularised in England; it quickly spread around the world. It was and still is the game of the English masses. The weekly gates in the professional leagues will, in my opinion, eclipse the aggregated crowds of both rugby disciplines and cricket. Professionalising the game in the late 19th century culminated in the formation of the Football League by Accrington; Aston Villa; Blackburn Rovers; Bolton Wanderers; Burnley; Derby County; Everton; Notts County; Preston North End; Stoke City; West Bromwich Albion & Wolverhampton Wanderers. Of the founder members, only Preston North End remain at their original ground. Thus Deepdale can honestly hold the claim to being the stadium in longest continual use by a professional football team. Thus it has a very good claim to being a suitable place for the National Football Museaum. The other important reason for the museum being in Preston, is that the founders were from Preston.

How can the National Football Museum be located in Preston? The rule book was written in Sheffield, where Sheffield FC the oldest Football Club can be found, which is about to celebrate its 150th anniversary this year! The oldest Derby in the world is played here between Sheffield FC and Hallam FC, we also have Sheffield Wednesday and Sheffield UTD, Sheffield UTD having the worlds oldest football stadium, Bramall Lane.
