Seen by some as a horrifying fashion faux pas and by others as essential to their comfort and well-being, the sock and sandal ensemble has sparked many a heated debate. While a recent internet poll saw almost half the voters declare that men should never combine the two (nearly twice the number who said they always should), a discovery at Piercebridge near Darlington might turn the tables on the sock and sandal detractors. Archaeologists have uncovered evidence that strongly suggests that manly Roman soldiers wore socks with open-toed sandals. Of course we could just be obsessed with the issue. After all, we’re not the only nation that does it – the Germans and Americans are just as guilty. Possibly more terrifying though is the news that a US patent has been taken out on an open-toed sock. We kid you not…
