Sadly England does not own the copyright to thatched cottages, go to Denmark, where there are hundreds of them, including the pretty village of Sletten just north of Copenhagen where almost every house has a thatched roof. Also Mexico has thatched roofs everywhere, known as Palapas.

All my life I have held great interest & affection for the thatched cottages I grew up knowing in the Hampshire countryside. Circumstances have brought me to Australia, but my heart lies deep in the english countryside. I have done tapestries of thatched cottages, and now in my sixties but working full-time, I have set myself a challenge...to make dioramas which include modelled, thatched cottages...not from plastic kits, but made from scratch and with real thatched appearance, using the finest materials available to maintain some reality...even when scrutinised by a camera lens. I also have written poetry about the beauty of such buildings. Oh yes, there is something very special about a thatched cottage. Thankyou for the opportunity to express, whether read or not, my innermost feelings.

Used so often in guide books to England, on chocolate boxes, calendars, postcards. Cooed over by estate agents and travel guides. Couldn't be more English.

The 'Ex-pats' dream of "Home " is a thatched cottage in an Enlish village - not an urban block of flats

No one else has them and they have endured over many centuries with the thatching craft being handed down through generations.

A thatched cottage is my dream home. When I think of the English countryside I always think of thatched cottages. If I won the lottery I would buy a thatched cottage and have a cottage garden and roses round the front door.

The old thatched cottage with roses round the door is instantly recognisable as being at the heart of England!
