The Armada Portrait is an icon not only of the English defeat of the Spanish Armada but of the Elizabethan Age in general.
Stephen Glynn

Without the determination of Queen Elizabeth and her steadfast leadership, the Armada would have succeeded in its mission, and these islands would once more have become catholic. Given the turbulent events leading up to Elizabeth's reign, this would have been unthinkable. And anyway, we don't like invaders! The Armada portrait commemmorates one of our greatest rulers, and her role in an event that shaped our destiny as a nation.
Francis Wright
