The English Butler

The butler (gentleman's gentleman or manservant) has always been associated with England, whether it was the actual butlers who worked for the toffs or the imaginary butlers of books, film and TV. To such an extent that when Hollywood wants to portray a butler they almost always cast an English actor in the part. Famous examples - Jeeves (from Jeeves and Wooster), Mr Hudson (from Upstairs Downstairs), John Gielgud in the film Arthur, Rowan Atkinson in Blackadder III, Michael Caine in Batman Begins. And don't forget that in the old murder mystery stories it was always 'the butler that did it'.
