These public gallows were a noted part of English history and many a late night traveller must have been either reassured or terrified as he passed the remains of a wrong-doer, left swaying in the night wind. Gibbets were a gallows-type structure from which the dead bodies of executed criminals were hanged on public display, often in chains, in order to deter other existing or potential criminals
