The Golden Arrow Boat Train

The Golden Arrow boat train was a most famous express train. Formed of luxurious Pullman carriages, it ran from London Victoria to Dover where a special steamer the TSS Canterbury took passengers across to Calais for the onward journey to Paris on board the Fleche D'Or. In those days these boat trains were the main way of travelling to continental Europe as there were no aeroplanes and the Channel Tunnel was not yet built. One could perhaps say that the prestigious Golden Arrow boat train was a precursor to today's Eurostar trains for rail travel between London and Paris. Today you can still travel in Pullman carriages like those used on the Golden Arrow by taking the luxury VSOE British Pullman train operated by Orient Express Trains & Cruises.
