The Humber Bridge

It was a long time coming, but it is magnificent now it’s there. Longer than the famous Golden Gate Bridge which is the pride of San Francisco, the Humber Bridge links the North and South Banks of the Humber Estuary.

People started talking about it in 1872, with various schemes for tunnels and bridges proposed over the years, but nothing ever came of them. In 1969 the government finally approved the funding, realizing that without it the area had no chance of developing. The first cars drove over on 24 June 1981. At a cost of £150 million – was it worth it?

You need to look at a map, really, to see why this bridge is so important. Without it, the docks in Hull are only serving communities to the north, leaving out the nearby communities on the other side of the river. The bridge is about so much more than just a world class feat of engineering, it is about unity, connection and communication for the people of Humberside.

It’s the longest suspension bridge in the country, it is as delicate as a spider’s web and as strong as the steel it’s made from. My late mother loved to watch it from the window of her flat. It spans the brown waters of the Humber and it says home to me every time I see it, although when I left Hull in 1965, it wasn’t even a gleam in an architect’s eye. If there they could build a motorway from Grimsby to the south which would make a huge difference to regeneration in the area. I like its bleakness and its solitary splendour ... and let’s face it, who else is going to vote for it?
