The Jaffa Cake

Is this an icon?

or

The Jaffa Cake

These squidgy discs of orangey loveliness have been the subject of much debate over the years, spawning one of the most complex questions to ever challenge humankind. Is it a cake or a biscuit? First created over 60 years ago by McVitie’s, the biscuits had to prove in 1991 that they are actually cakes, and therefore should not attract VAT. ICONS writer Emily says her Dad remembers being given one solitary Jaffa Cake for dessert in the 1950s – a time of innocence when today’s Jaffa Cubes would have been unthinkable.

Need to find like-minded Jaffa Cake fans fast? There are societies dedicated to their enjoyment, including the Huggabugga Jaffa Cake Appreciation Society International, and also Jaffery Goodness.
