The Matthew Sailing Ship

20th May 1497. The Matthew sailed from Bristol, under Captain Master John Cabot. After calling at Bantry Bay in Ireland, it sailed to Newfoundland and planted the Royal Ensign there on Midsummer's Day 1497. In so doing Cabot established the first English colony and the first European landfall on the American continent. A replica of the ship is based now in Bristol Harbour.
