God Save the Queen record sleeve by Jamie Reid

Jamie Reid's sleeve design for the Sex Pistols' single "God Save The Queen" was shocking and provocative, captured the spirit of the moment in 1977, and is now widely recognised across the world as a piece of English art. It demonstrates what I think is a very English self-deprecatory and tame rebelliousness - in this case "subverting" two of the most quintessentially English icons - the monarch and the national flag (OK, the British flag, not the English one!) And the oh-so-shocked reaction to it also said a whole lot about the ability of the English to take offence at the slightest provocation and take themselves all too seriously.
