The Songs of Ray Davies

In an age when most pop groups slavishly aped the American style, Ray Davies and The Kinks were (and remained) uncompromisingly English. Songs like "Autumn Almanac", "Waterloo Sunset" and "Sunny Afternoon" established this fine band as an English icon.

Ray Davies' songs are genuinely nostalgic about many aspects of England. But at the same time he manages to be gently teasing and cleverly satirical (in a very English way) about the very idea of nostalgia and "ye olde England". That's Englishness in a nutshell!
