The Three Lions Badge

As our thoughts turned to events in Germany, it seemed only right and proper that the three lions badge on the England shirt should receive nomination as an icon. Despite their close association with England, the appearance of lions on coats of arms was originally derived from the House of Normandy, which arrived on our shores in the form of William the Conqueror in 1066.

The number of lions varied initially between the Norman pair, and the single splendid golden beast on a red ground adopted by Henry II in 1158. When Richard I (known to history as the Lionheart) came to the throne in 1189, the emblem was revised again to depict not one but three majestic creatures.

On the national football logo, which dates back to Victorian times, the three dark blue snarling beasts are interspersed with ten red-and-white English roses.

Our national emblem worn by football fans everywhere - the largest display of national pride?

The three gold lions on a red background first appeared in 1152 when King Henry II (at the time Count of Anjou and bearing 2 gold lions on his shield) married Eleanor of Aquitaine (bearing one gold lion on her shield) two years before Henry became king. The two shields were combined to create the 3 lions we know today, which are now part of the royal shield due to Henry becoming king. I know this through research as I have the same shield in my coat of arms.

I was once told, by apparently a self-knowledgable Gent that, the Three Lions signified England, Scotland and Wales. Is there any truth in this? He could give me no answer to why there are 10 Red Roses on the emblem. Does anyone have an answer to these questions regarding the Lions and Roses?
