The Wash-House

The advent of the wash-house came about because of a wonderful woman called Kitty Wilkinson, from Liverpool. Her work encouraging cleanliness in the fight against cholera in acutely over-crowded slum districts heralded a revolution for the working class poor. Hundreds of thousands of lives were saved because of improved hygiene - her contribution to the health of the nation is immense. It introduced a new era of concern for the populace as a whole that created the conditions for the birth of the NHS.
