Comment on Thomas the Tank Engine

I remember when Thomas and his friends were nothing more than the small child size books by Rev. W. Audrey. I read these voraciously as a child and loved the paintings of the fictional land in which the railway engines lived. I am afraid I would only nominate that version of Thomas and not the contemporary mulitnational toy selling icon that he has sadly become. He does not seem as Britiish has he once was, and I feel sad that yet another quintessential bit of history has been devoured by an increasingly homogenized cultural mentality.

"Thomas the Tank Engine" would surely be at the top of the children's list, alongside many other children's favourites.
