Zippy from Rainbow

The television programmes we watch as children inevitably become part of who we are; and if a programme runs for twenty years it will become part of national culture. Rainbow was the ITV network’s answer to Play School and Sesame Street and was shown at lunchtime in the pioneer days of afternoon children’s television. With its colourful animations, catchy music and eccentric characters Rainbow was great fun, as well as educating pre-schoolers along the way. Zippy was, perhaps, the most memorable of the characters – he was certainly the noisiest! A beige creature with an oval head, big blue eyes and a zip for a mouth, the fundamental question has remained unanswered: just what kind of creature was he supposed to be? Roy Skelton, the voice of Zippy for many years, describes him as “the little kid at school who knows everything and gets his come-uppance” which explains why he often ended up with his head in his hands crying “It’s not FAIR!” Some have called him the “child of the Thatcher generation” – have now, pay later. Roy does admit he based the voice on a cross between Ian Paisley and Margaret Thatcher!

Zippy is a familiar figure for kids who grew up in the 1970's and 1980's. The perpetual naughty child, along with Geoffrey, Bungle and George he entertained and educated the nation at lunch time on itv. www.rainbow.web.com
