Your photos shows a girl in a miniskirt carrying bags displaying the union flag. Perhaps it should be a British icon as the rest of the country wore them too. Myself included.

A symbol of post war freedom and feminism, the mini skirt was a symbol of "Swinging London" made famous by "Twiggy" and other leading models such as Jean Shrimpton "the shrimp". It helped consolidate London as the Post War City for the young, alongside the Mini Motor car and "The Beatles"

Two great events happened in 1966 - miniskirted legs and England winning the World Cup! 40 years later it's trousers everywhere and England struggle to beat Andorra! Mary Quant should have been made a Dame and Bobby Moore knighted!

I owned a Boutique for 16yrs and sold both Mary Quant clothes and makeup. Both a huge success. I still have just one little red mini in my wardrobe, which now looks more like a top to me! Any offers?

As much as the mini is an icon of England, this "mini" icon is actually about the skirt, which is (IMHO) much more interesting for totally different reasons. Although, a girl in a mini, wearing a mini is probably even more English.

A bold, sexy and iconic design from one of Britain's most celebrated contemporary designers. Symbolic of a unique cultural turning point for women and men across Britain and the western world. It is also closely associated with the punk movement spanning music, art, politics and everyday culture.

Comment on The Mini

A truely classic design that lives on in a contemporary environment.

Even though we also produced the mini here in Australia , it is instantly recognised and identified as being an English vehicle , more so than any other car . I'm sure it's also more identifiable world wide as being English than a lot other "English Icons" .

The mini is one of the greatest English icons ever

Comment on The Mini

Alongside the Land Rover, the (original) Mini is instantly recognisable and instantly associated with England. Both were exported extensively and are still popular throughout the world. To be an icon, I believe global recognition is needed. Both these vehicle have this and deserve the title 'English Icon'.
