1. An Oz-rockers AC/DC tribute band calls itself Stiff Upper Lip, after one of the group’s albums.

2. George and Ira Gershwin’s 1937 song "Stiff Upper Lip", made famous by Ella Fitzgerald, said the quality was “what makes every Englishman a fighter through and through”.

3. A 2005 study by scientists at the University of Texas found that keeping a stiff upper lip – hiding your emotions – can impair memory.

4. Laurence Durrell’s second collection of short stories, published in 1958, was called Stiff Upper Lip.

5. PG Wodehouse’s novel, Stiff Upper Lip, Jeeves, became Trouble At Totleigh Towers in the fourth series of the TV Jeeves and Wooster adaptations.

6. In the 1998 film, Stiff Upper Lips, the role of Samuel West’s aunt was played by his real-life mother, Prunella Scales.

7. New York spa Bliss sells a beauty product called Spiff Upper Lip, which promises to alleviate “upper lip ageing”.

8. The US magazine Newsday declared that Helen Mirren, in her portrayal of Elizabeth II in the film The Queen (2006), was “breathing life into a stiff upper lip”.

9. The German translation of stiff upper lip is Halt die Ohren steif!.

10. JM Cavaness, author of the poem Keep A Stiff Upper Lip, was the owner of Kansas newspaper the Chetopa Advance.
