The Archers

Every day of the week bar Saturday, around five million people tune in to the world's longest-running radio drama serial, BBC Radio 4's The Archers. What they are after is their daily 12-minute fix of Ambridge life, the goings-on among England's most famous community of rural folk.

While TV soaps have become ever more extravagant in the kinds of events they are prepared to depict, nothing has ever shocked the nation to its core quite like the death of Grace Archer in a stable fire in the 1950s. It is just because The Archers
has always kept both feet firmly planted in the real world that its millions of fans continue to treasure it.
