The Works of Beatrix Potter

Beatrix Potter’s books encapsulate something so very English. Not only do they record in narrative and image the features of an English natural world we all inhabit in our imaginations, but also that strange relationship the English have with animals.

Beatrix Potter created distinct worlds and animal-led adventure for her young readers, removing the human as protagonist and inserting the animal at the centre of an imaginative and exciting world.

And it’s these animals, imbued and imprinted with very human names, costumes and manners but in a natural world, that delight and jump off the page. The fact these English characters and landscapes still appeals, says much for enduring Englishness, and is what makes Potter’s books so very iconic.
