Tilbury Docks

When Tilbury Docks first opened in the 1880s, it traded in all sorts of goods - including madeira, timber, sausage skins packed in brine and chutney! Nowadays it is particularly used by passenger liners. One of Jeremy Deller's Turner Prize-winning Five Memorials can be found in the passenger lounge of the cruise terminal – a brightly coloured woven banner commemorating the arrival of the Empire Windrush, the ship that brought Caribbean immigrants to England in 1948.

Although not open to the general public, anyone embarking on a Baltic cruise can catch a glimpse of the banner.
